Lullabies

Ariel got me thinking about the songs people sing to their babies.

I love that she's singing old love songs to her beautiful baby girl, only I don't know many old love songs.

My daddy always used to sing us to sleep with primary songs. And I love that.

My mom and my sister have beautiful voices and they both play guitar, so camping trips bring out some of my favorite songs in the whole wide world like For Baby & Love is All Around. I'm relatively certain those will be regular lullabies at my house along with my favorite primary song lullabies like Whenever I Hear The Song of a Bird & When He Comes Again.

So, my question for the day is this. What songs do you sing to your babies? What did your parents sing to you? What songs make the best lullabies in your mind?

  1. I remember my sister Kari always singing to me the song "Somewhere out there" from An American Tale...it's one that's stuck with me and I've passed it on to my boys. I've also always sang "You are my Sunshine" to my little ones.

  2. You are my sunshine and my boys all time favorite is "Baby of Mine" from dumbo. I sing it to them on a daily basis. I love adding singing in my house, Gavin loves to sing all around the house, its so cute! His primary teacher always comments after church how much he loves singing time. So fun.

  3. My mom always sang "My Heavenly Father Loves Me" to us. I sing that one and "My Favortie Things" to my kids. Primary songs are really great.

  4. I plan on my children knowing nearly every lyric Bob Dylan wrote before they can recite the alphabet. Well, maybe not every lyric, but I plan on singing "Blowing in the Wind" and Mr. Tamborine Man" and some of the other more lullabish songs. I probably won't be singing the song with the chorus of "Everybody must get stoned."

  5. You are my sunshine and Pooh Corner are my favorites. Stetson is stuck currently on Twinkle so I sing those three nearly every night. I have also made up my own words to Whenever I Hear the Song of a Bird. It's changes each time a little but I just make up words about the boys to that tune. I'll be embarrassed when they learn it in Primary and sing all the wrong words!!

  6. Luke and I were talking just last night about how nice it will be to sing lullabies.

"Whenever I Hear the Song of a Bird" was my favorite, along with a Joni Mitchell song called "Circle Game" about kids growing up

"And the seasons, they go 'round and 'round, and the painted ponies go up and down. We're captive on a carrosel of time. We can't return, we can only look behind from where we came, and go 'round and 'round and 'round in the circle game."

The later verses, about the kid at sixteen, twenty, now make me cry in fond memory of my mom singing to me.

  10. Pretty much the only songs I know are primary songs. Brock would only fall asleep if we sang "I am a Child of God". Braedyn loved that and "I love to see the temple". Now that Braedyn is in Primary we get a CD of all the primary songs the kids are learning for the year, so I play that every night. Which works much better since I have a TERRIBLE singing voice :). Plus, it's a good way for Braedyn to learn all his songs he needs for the primary program. Before we got those I would play the Children's Songbook CD's, and my boys loved it!

  11. Man, I really wished I knew more songs. Memorize every verse to every song you ever knew. You'll need it.

  13. "Some songs make me happy, some songs make me saaaaaaad" :D

The Primary Songbook is the best! Plus, Raffi and movie songs. It's surprising how fast she learns and memorizes songs. We had a really nice lullaby CD when Ryann was a baby but then she jammed a cassette tape in there and somehow the cd broke in half. I'm considering buying it again for Lucy because it was really soothing music.

One funny lullaby Reagan (the nephew) sings is "Ring of Fire." Remind me to do an impression for you sometime.

  14. I love ALL of these suggestions. Especially the one about not teaching him the chorus of "Everybody must get stoned". :)

  15. So I'm late on the responding but I think that singing anything you like, just slow and sweet is the best lullaby for your little one. They just want to hear your voice, and by the way you release oxytocin when you sing with your child/family (the feel good hormone, same one you release while nursing a baby). Always a good thing after you've had the baby.

  16. Im late too... however mine is kind of funny. I have sung every song in the book when Jayden gets fussy.. The only one that calms him down enough to fall asleep..? "Popcorn Popping" .. and I dont think it's a very calm song. Whatever :)

  17. I sing lots of primary songs and other church hymns...other than that I sing lots of wacky songs that I make-up on the fly. (Just don't ask me to do it while other people are around..)

  18. This has NOTHing to do with your questions. But there is a song that your mom/your family used to sing...that went something like "sweet violets, sweeter than all the roses, covered all over from head to toe, covered all over with sweet violets...there was once a farmer..." and it ends there...but I always remember you guys for that song. I loved it.
