Door-opening and fly-swatters

Yesterday I went to a movie with my sister and my mom while my other sister watched all of our kids and prepared our post-movie snacks. How glad are you that you aren't The Other Sister in our family? She volunteered since she just saw the movie two days ago....still....

While we, 4 adults & 7 kids, were at The Other Sister's house, a period of about an hour, I'm fairly certain her front and back doors were opened more times than all of the doors in my house have been opened since they day we moved in (nearly 4 years ago).

This is surprising because based on the number of Super-Duper-ultra-long-lifed flies currently in my living room I would've bet that Tommy had learned how to open the door and spent all day every day simply watching the doors swing on their (totally awesome - and totally removable) hinges. However, he has yet to master the knob-turning task. So I'm left to wonder, how did the flies get in here?!?!

When I'm done wondering, I'm ready to kill them all - a job I find disgusting, frustrating and even unsatisfying.

That's why we don't own a fly-swatter.

So I thought I'd buy one. But guess what? Places don't sell fly-swatters. Fly-swatters are the kind of thing people don't really buy. They just have them. Maybe they are built-in to their house. Maybe they inherited them from their great great grandmother. Maybe they have always had it. Maybe they were given as wedding gifts from people they love. I don't know where they come from, I just know that they are not for sale and I'm the only person on the planet who doesn't have one.

I can tell you don't believe me. You're rolling your eyes thinking "clearly someone sells fly-swatters. Take a chill-pill." So I ask you, where did you get yours? Go ahead, admit it. You don't have a clue.

  1. i have been in the same predicament with flies... although i won't buy a fly swatter because i think they're gross (and then where do you put it after you get fly guts all over it?). so, i use rolled up newspaper and then throw it away after. goodluck!

  2. We have the same problem! Who replaced all the mosquitoes with flies? I thought all of our flies got in when my niece and nephew were here over a week ago....but we still have living flies....so maybe they are multiplying in my house. PS. We don't have a fly swatter either...I haven't even attempted to find one.

  3. I remember it being hard to find. They might be a seasonal thing. Try the dollar store though, I bet they have some.

  4. Your posts always make me laugh - I like that.

I don't have a fly swatter either, so you aren't the only one in the world without one.

  5. Dollar store. It is the sort of thing they always have. Plus, it is only a dollar, which is handy if you feel the need to replace it often due to the build-up of fly guts.

  7. We have a bright pink one of course, but I do not have any idea where i got it. I know I purchased it somewhere when we lived in Provo, but where?? We are also having the fly problem which really stinks because Gwen is terrifed of flies. Spiders? no. Flies? Yes! Naomi can hardly eat because she is afraid a fly might have touched her food at some point in time. We hang our fly swatter on an over the door hook inside behind a door in the laundry room. That way it never really touches anything.

  8. I hate killing bugs too, especially when guts get everywhere. So I vacuum bugs. It works better in the morning when it is a little cooler and they aren't so active (mostly for flys the rest are easy). Then I just vacuum them up and let the vacuum do the killings.

  9. Someone gave us ours for our wedding. I would try the dollar store, like the other ladies said. I'm sure they have some!

  10. Haha- I JUST bought a fly swatter. Surprisingly I didn't find one at the Dollar Tree.. but it was at Target. I came upon it by chance as it was with the kitchen utensils. Makes sense right? I thought it was kind of gross. Interesting fact though- since we bought the fly swatter I haven't found another fly in our house... I think they might be scared to come in now?
